Every ranking and star rating is the output of a specific, versioned methodology — not a black box. Here's exactly what goes into it.
Last updated: April 2026 · v2.0
Our headline Composite Rating (0–100) is the weighted average of ratings from all active evaluator sources for a given player. Sources carry equal weight unless one has consistently demonstrated better predictive accuracy — in which case we publish the weighting table below.
Ratings are recomputed nightly and a full recalculation runs monthly. The Updated timestamp on every rankings page reflects the last full pass.
A 5-star prospect is in the top 2% of their class nationally. 4-star = next ~10%. 3-star = next ~30%. Anything below that we don't publish — we'd rather say nothing than promote a player who isn't a scholarship-level prospect.
The Elite badge is reserved for the top 1% of each class — typically 2–3 players per class year we cover.
Every ranked player gets three ranks:
Coverage depth varies by state. Arizona and California, our two launch markets, have the most granular state-rank precision because every prospect has been hand-scouted. Other states are filling in through the same playbook — when a state hits full coverage, its state ranks tighten to match. National ranks re-baseline across all states with every recalc. See /coverage for the state-by-state tier breakdown.
A Verified blue check means the player (or their verified guardian, for minors) has claimed the profile and confirmed the information is accurate. Anyone on the profile can request claiming — we confirm identity before approving.
Rankings are editorial opinions, but factual errors (wrong school, wrong height, wrong offers) are bugs. Submit a correction on any player profile via the Submit Update button or email tips@offsznnetwork.com. Verified corrections land on the player's public timeline with credit to the submitter.
Disagreements about ranking placement (as opposed to factual errors) get reviewed in our weekly editorial meeting — email a detailed case to editorial@offsznnetwork.com.
We cover high school athletes. Profiles never include phone numbers, home addresses, or unverified private information. Any athlete (or guardian) can request profile removal by emailing privacy@offsznnetwork.com. We respond within 48 hours.
Club / AAU program rankings are a composite of four signals: peak talent (30%) — the highest-composite player on the roster; roster quality (25%) — average composite of all rostered players; college pipeline (25%) — what share of alumni signed at any college level; and roster size (20%) — depth matters for circuit play.
Rankings update when player rosters change or when a player's composite rating is recalculated. Programs spanning EYBL, 3SSB, Adidas, and independent circuits are all included — affiliation tier is not a direct input to the score, so an independent club with elite players outranks a circuit team with an average roster.
Current evaluator sources weighted into the composite: OFF SZN, Scout Elite, Prospect Wire, Hoop Tracker (basketball); OFF SZN Gridiron, Desert Trenches, Southwest Gridiron Report (football).
Each source's individual rating is visible via the Compare sources button on any ranking row.
