Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisville and North Carolina all made the final cut. That's four programs with national titles, packed arenas and long lists of pros. For the best prospect in Arizona, the decision was never going to be about finding a big stage. All four had one. It was about which of them he wanted to grow on.
On Friday, DeMarcus Henry gave his answer on ESPN's NBA Today at 3 p.m. Eastern, noon here in Arizona: North Carolina.
That's a big day for the Tar Heels. It also matters here. Henry played his high school ball in Chandler at AZ Compass Prep, and the country saw an Arizona program's top prospect make his pick on national television. That's what this commitment means for the state. The best player in Arizona's 2027 class is also one of the best in the country, and he showed up every week against the kind of competition that got him ready for that moment.
Where he stands
Both major boards agree on where Henry belongs.
ESPN ranks him No. 2 nationally, the No. 1 small forward and the No. 1 player in Arizona in the 2027 class, with a 95 scout grade.
247Sports has him at No. 4 nationally, the No. 1 small forward and No. 1 in Arizona, with a 98 rating.
Both list him at 6-foot-7 at small forward. Whichever board you use, he's a top-five player in the country, the top wing in the class and the top player in Arizona.
What North Carolina is getting
On film, Henry is a big lefty wing whose tools have started turning into real production. He moves easily for his size. He gets end to end without wasting steps, and he can slide his feet on the perimeter. That makes him a wing you can put on the ball without giving up size. His touch has been there for years, and his stroke looks clean when he's in rhythm.
The next step is the one the boards have already rewarded: consistency. For a long time the two-way package was easy to see in flashes. Now he's putting it together possession after possession, and that's why he finished this process as a top-five prospect nationally rather than just an intriguing one. His frame is still filling out, so his best basketball should still be ahead of him. That's the part that should excite people in Chapel Hill.
Why it matters for Carolina
North Carolina still needed a centerpiece for its 2027 class, and it landed the top-ranked small forward on both ESPN and 247Sports. Head coach Michael Malone's staff made a strong final push. The Tar Heels were in Arizona on Wednesday to see Henry at Compass Prep, according to Tar Heels Wire, just days after he finished a campus visit to Chapel Hill.
A wing with Henry's size, defensive range and shot-making upside is what high-level programs build around. Now Carolina gets to build around him.
What it means in Arizona
Compass Prep has become a regular stop for college coaches, and Henry is the latest reason why. Every time a player like this commits on a national broadcast, kids across the state notice. College coaches come back to Arizona gyms, and the next group of prospects gets seen. That's the exposure this site exists to push, and Henry just earned the biggest version of it.
He still has a full high school season ahead before he heads to Chapel Hill, and we'll be watching all of it. For now, Arizona's best player is a Tar Heel.
